L- Glutamine is an amino acid that is abundantly found in the muscle and plasma cells. Like any other amino acids, it has a role in protein synthesis. Other metabolic function includes producing ammonium to regulate acid- base balance in the kidneys, giving off nitrogen for anabolic processes, as carbon source for citric- acid cycle and it also serves as a source of energy once glucose is depleted. L- Glutamine is naturally produced by the body in small quantities making it one of the non- essential amino acids. Research however proves that L- Glutamine is in fact essential to the human body in a lot of ways and is conditionally essential especially when it is indicated.
In doing rigorous muscle movements such as during a workout or carrying out physically demanding tasks, the body will need a lot of L- Glutamine to maintain muscle strength. It also contributes in building muscle tissues making it helpful to people who needs to increase muscle mass for bodybuilding, weightlifting, and endurance sports.
Studies show that L- glutamine increases recovery time of post-operative patients by regulating metabolic functions that were compromised during surgery. It was observed that patients who were given vitamin supplements plus L- Glutamine have recovered more quickly than those who were not given any. It is also believed that L- Glutamine has its role in keeping the immune system healthy since it is one of the building blocks for a powerful antioxidant called Glutathione.
Natural food sources of L- Glutamine are meat, dairy products, and vegetable juices. These dietary sources are enough to maintain an adequate level of L- Glutamine in the body. However during stressful situations like when you are sick, your body exhausts its glucose levels to cope up and fight off stress. Dosage of L- Glutamine supplements vary from person to person. Higher dosages are required for immediate supplemental needs like in people about to and have undergone surgical operations. For people who wants to take L- Glutamine for muscle growth purposes, recommended doses considered to be safe for long term use starts low at 2grams per day and maximum dosage is up to 40 grams daily. For people who do not need high amounts of L- Glutamine in their blood but does not want to rely on dietary sources to cover for the body’s daily L- Glutamine needs, they can choose to supplement their body with L- Glutamine by buying high quality multivitamins which contain at least 2- 10 grams of L- Glutamine. Since L- Glutamine is a naturally occurring substance in the body, there is no danger in having adverse side effects attributed to its intake. However, be sure to take just the right amount of L- glutamine since it can cause stomach upset when taken in excess, just like any other vitamin supplements available in the market,
